I was asked to expand on this... not much is written of him...
and most of it is confusing...

In one book it said he was more popular than Oden in worshipers...
but than why arent there major myths about him?

He is an archer! WOOT! He also skiis and hunts!

He is one of the Gods of Asgard.

Its said he shares rule of Asgard with Oden, having summer
and Ullr, during the winter!**

He may have been Sif's son and his stepfather Sif's husband Thor... but... tales confict.

It is also said that He married Skaldi the winter Goddess
whos name means Shadow.

He is called 'God of the Shield'

His rune is Eihwaz! (EI F AE)
(which looks like a backwards z)
and is the Yew Tree!
from which the best bows are made!
Its also a symbol of immortality!
Its colour is black.

His name means "The Brilliant One" and he is associated with the Aurora Borealis. He has been identified as a very archaic God of death in Norway. At some time in history, Ullr was held to be just as important as Odin, and in winter he was considered to be the ruler in Asgard.

His domain in skiing did not only include skiis themselves but ski shoes (although I don't quite see how any celestial divination was needed in these). This domain was more of a "on the side" job, he was far more important as the god of hunting and winter.

Ullr was always depicted on skiis with a longbow made of yew, Ullr was an honourable God who personified the Wild Hunt that the Vikings not only used for food, but in battle to "hunt" down their enemies and sacrifices. Thus, Ullr was often related to battle and to duels, and would quite often be called upon before them. The Norse would pray to Ullr for a "winter blessing", which generally meant a good hunt to get their hungry people through the winter. In this winter and skiing aspect, he was almost identical to Skadi. The difference being was that Ullr, born to Thor and Sif, was an Aesir, whereas Skadi, born to Thiadi, was a Jotun. Regardless, the two were closely related, hunting together and somewhere along the line they were married.

Ullr gained his death aspect from the fact that in the summer he would travel to Helheim (Niflheim) to live with Hel, daughter of Loki and the goddess of death. Those that died during the winter would be taken to Helheim by Ullr when he left for it at the beginning of Summer (assuming, of course, that they hadn't already been selected to travel to Valhalla by Odin and Freyja's Valkyries). Where Loki was depicted as a malignant trickster, and Hel depicted as the spawn of evil, Ullr was not branded for consorting with these two. He was considered a good and honourable God, and was never at all related to the other two in a negative way.

In Winter, however, he went from consorting with the underground to transcending to the heavens. Odin always left Asgard in the Winter, and Ullr would take his place. When Odin left, he also left Freyja behind, and Ullr would take her in his absence. Although Ullr was considered a good and honourable God, he was not a very cheerful God, and he very rarely bestowed a bounty upon Midgard unless the people prayed very hard; and even then he was known to completely ignore them if he was in a bad mood (which was more often than not). In the Winter Ullr not only took over from Odin, but seemingly absorbed his duties. Where Odin was worshipped as the God of the hunt in Summer, depicted as being the initiator and leader of the wild hunt, in Winter it would be Ullr leading the hunt. Thus Ullr is almost an Odin alter ego; although it is also possible that Ullr is an older Odin that became less important, as in the early Germanic tribes Ullr, not Odin, was the chief God.

Ullr's month was the Yule month, the month before the Winter Solstice. Ullr was absorbed into Christianity as St. Hubert, patron saint of the hunt.

In Viktor Rydberg's idiosyncratic Teutonic Mythology Ullr is the son of Sif and Egill-Örvandill, half-brother of Svipdagr-Óðr, nephew of Völundr and a cousin of Skaði. His father, Egill, was the greatest archer in the mythology, and Ullr follows in his father's footsteps. Ullr helped Svipdagr-Eiríkr rescue Freyja from the giants. He also ruled over the Vanir when they held Ásgarðr during the war between the Vanir and the Æsir.

While most of Rydberg's theories are dismissed as fanciful by modern scholars his idea that Ullr is connected with the elves of Völundarkviða is not absurd. Both seem associated with skiing and hunting and since Ullr's father is not identified as one of the Æsir he may have been of another race.

Ullr - The Man The Myth
You know the feeling-you are on your skis working the rhythm, enjoyin' the speed, and suddenly for a few turns, you feel immortal. The feeling is difficult to describe but perhaps you sensed a little inspiration from Ullr…the god of choice among Scandinavians and backcountry snow lovers alike.

Ullr, a.k.a. Uller, Ullin, Holler, Vulder, and Ull, is a pre-Viking era Nordic God and he kept fine company with the likes of Odin, Thor, and other esteemed deities. Among his many skills, he was the god of skiing, archery, hunting, and was known to be quite promiscuous (which he may have inherited from his mother Sif, the Goddess of Fertility). Sure, Ullr had some neat traits but in our world of plastic boots, cap skis, laser sights, and Viagra, it's easy to dismiss them as the quaint skills of some randy old god. Nevertheless, think back to the days when being noted as a master archer was no slight task.

At the time, Ullr was competing with the likes of Thor, who brandished a hammer capable of shooting lightning bolts in battle (sort of like skiing old Karhu XCD's while your buddy is on a pair of AK Launchers). Then there was Loki the trickster, who could assume the form of animals to deceive or escape the wrath of the gods. Despite his lack of supernatural powers (aside from skiing), Ullr was the name invoked to warrant good luck when undertaking a duel. His name, which means glorious or dazzling, clearly reflects his abilities, and myth has it he once held the seat of the highest god. His character and the legends associated with it are pervasive throughout the historic tales of the Vikings, Goths, Saxons, and ancient Britons. Basically, Ullr rules!

In addition to dueling, Gods were also known to have a penchant for good times, and Ullr, when he was not out making fresh tracks, was known to flirt with the Goddesses on a regular basis. His sexual prowess is legendary and if modern pop culture is any indication, then the goddesses may well have been sporting horns and pointy metal bras-necessitating some smooth talkin' and delicate moves on Ullr's part (and you thought the obstacle course on Survivor was tough). As an historical aside: Ullr's sexual prowess seems to support archaeological evidence that polypropylene underwear has not existed until recent times given the effect sweaty polypro has on most folks' amorous inclinations. However, most important to us snow lovers, Ullr is the god of skiing. As the undisputed master of skis, he often used his skill to escape from foes or track down prey in addition to shredding fresh POW. In a sport intimately tied with Scandinavian tradition, it is no wonder that in Norway there are a number of place names that incorporate the name of Ullr.

In the days of Ullr, skis were not entirely what we'd recognize today. In fact, what we know as skis probably did not evolve until the last century. In the time of the gods, skis were akin to two planks of wood-one wrapped with cord to provide traction. As people were often hunting or at war, a single ski pole was often used, allowing a free hand for a weapon.

It is said that Ullr was such a great skier that he would streak across the sky leaving the brilliant stars as his trails (they obviously had some fine powder days). Though very skilled, Ullr guarded his knowledge closely and refused to show the other gods how to ski. Luckily for us, he let the secret out of the bag and we will all be soon celebrating his glory. Next time you are trying to bash through some wind crust or plunge head first into fresh waist deep powder, be sure to invoke his name and remember - ULLR RULES!

Ull must have been a very popular deity in Scandinavia because of the frequency of his name in place names (e.g. Ulstein, "Ull's Rock").

In addition to all the names listed above, Uller was also known as Ullen or Ullin in Norway. All these name variations give us hints that he was a very old god. The fact that he has given name to numerous places in Scandinavia is another indication of that. Yet he doesn't seem to feature in any of the cool stories from Norse mythology, there just isn't as much lore about him as there is about Odin, Thor and Freya. Uller probably belongs to an older generation of gods, along with Tyr and Heimdall - the people who worshipped them lived in Scandinavia before the arrival of the Vikings

The modern form of the name Uller, Ull, is not at all used for naming children in Norway (or in other parts of Scandinavia, for that matter), despite the revival of other old names from Norse mythology. The reason for this is simple: The name means "wool" in modern Norwegian. There are some derivations in circulation, however. Ulrik for boys and Ulla for girls are good, normal names. But it is in place names that we truly see the influence of the old god.

Uller seems to have been a really popular god in the very old days, especially in the eastern part of Norway, where heaps of places are named after him. Only in the Oslo area, several wellknown places bear his mark:
Ullern is a fashionable part of the city with its own church, which is therefore indirectly named after the Norse god.
Ullevål is world famous in Norway for its football stadium, where national matches are played. The name means Uller's field; which is quite appropriate for a god of sports.
Ullersmo, the location of a national prison, has the same meaning.

In the rest of the country, a name like Ullinshof - Uller's temple - is found in several places, many of them churches and vicarages. The churches in question were probably built on top of an old temple. There are many instances of this, but most of the churches have since been renamed.

There are also many places called Ullensaker and Ulvang, which both mean Uller's fields. I could go on, but I'd really better stop now.

A sky god of Asgard, but with some links to the Vanir gods. The son of Sif and stepson of Thor, he is responsible for justice, and oaths were once sworn over the 'ring of Ull'. DOES SANTA CLAUS REALLY EXIST?

I am pleased to present the annual scientific inquiry into Santa Claus.

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species
of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are
insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer
which only Santa has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world.
BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish
and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to to 15% of the total
- 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average
(census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes.
One presumes there's at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different
time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west
(which seemes logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is
to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has
1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney,
fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat
whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the

sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8
million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course,
we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept),
we are now talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2
million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least
once every 31 hours, plus feeding and etc.

This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second,
3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest
man- made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky
27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles
per hour.

4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming
that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds),
the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably
described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more

than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could
pull TEN TIMES the normal anount, we cannot do the job with eight, or
even nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even
counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison
- this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.

5) 353,000 tons travelling at 650 miles per second creates enourmous air
resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts
re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb
14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each. In short, they will
burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them,
and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will
be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be
subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity.
A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back
of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

In conclusion -
If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's dead now.

I have had a hard time finding a norse myth that proves this...

(but in celtic I did find supporting myths that the God of the dead is an albino...
and so are his hounds)

Also I have found myth evindence that Ullr is the ruler of Asgard during the winter months...
and Oden has been known to be responsible for the dead...
so it makes sense that Ullr is during his time of rule.

The orginal gift was that he took those who were meant to die during the winter
and gave to the families what they would need to survive...

Just read your Ullr page. In particular, the santa clause list. You forgot to mention one thing. Every country, Except america and presumedly canadian provincial group as well, have their own unique "sinter Claus " legend and even different feast days. So one would think until the Roman empire and later the Roman Catholic Church came along and pastuerized them into one St. Nick , there were many . A cult of Ullr possibly or maybe a Clan of same minded gods, Could have even included Prometheus (after all he did bring fire to the mortals down south).
After all we are talking about the people who made Lugus in to Apollo Lugus and Dionysius into Fat old drunk Bacchus
